Sacramento, CA - May 14, 2008

The 2008 Best Solutions Award will be presented to the Department of Fish and Game Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) and Kiefer Consulting for their design of the Incident Tracking Database System at the Government Technology Conference (GTC) on May 14, 2008.

Each year, OSPR handles over 3,000 spill incidents that threaten the waters of the state of California. The new system simplifies the process for updating incident report information. In addition, it leverages existing data, reduces time and travel to maintain incident reports, and improves incident information accuracy.

“We are so pleased and honored to be recognized by the GTC for this collaborative solution,” said Greg Kiefer, President and CEO, Kiefer Consulting, Inc. “Many governmental and nongovernmental agencies face similar technical challenges. They have a distributed system for inputting data and they have a need to streamline that system for greater efficiency and communication.”

Kiefer provided the technical resources to lead in the design and delivery of the Web-based interface, emphasizing industry best practices, formalized processes, and useful documentation to ensure clear and consistent communication for all project participants at all stages of development.

One of the unique components of this process was Kiefer’s ability to build in mentoring for OSPR programmers.  They received technical guidance and professional tools that helped them through the development process.

“We really believe it solves only part of the problem to provide a client with a technical solution if we don’t also empower the client to implement and develop the solution over time,” said Greg Kiefer. “Mentoring has been a productive key for helping agencies whose IT resources are already stretched thin to participate in the engineering and build of their software. This knowledge is a tremendous agency asset that informs decisions about maintenance, operations, and ongoing integration.”

The 20th Annual GTC will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center in Sacramento from May 12 to May 16. This year’s theme is “Conference on California’s Future.” Best Solutions award candidates must be a joint custom development between a government agency and a partnering firm. For the solution to be  worthy of recognition it must result in significant benefits – saving time, money, or effort. Kiefer Consulting will be exhibiting in Booth 602 from May 14 to May 16.
