Our Focus on the Features blog highlights exciting features in the Microsoft Office 365 applications that you use every day. You may not realize that these features exist, so these blogs will hopefully shine some light on the capabilities that enable you to do more with Office 365.
Last year, Microsoft provided Office 365 users with the ability to copy files in Office 365. In recent days, Microsoft has added the ability to move SharePoint and OneDrive files in Office 365 with metadata and version management! This important update to Office 365 helps users better manage information architecture and allows organizations to find relevant information quickly.
It’s simple to move files from any folder in Office 365
To move a file in OneDrive or SharePoint, all you have to do is select the file and then choose Move To.
You can then choose where you’d like to move the file to. There will be a list of destinations that Office 365 determines are the most relevant sites This intuitive list of destinations comes compliments of Microsoft Graph. You can also browse to locate a specific destination in either SharePoint or OneDrive.
Moving it is better than copying it
A few things to note that are different about Copy and Move:
When a file is moved, you retain all their original versions from the source. If you copy the file, you only get a final version of a file.
- If you move a file, it will still appear in the source directory until it is fully moved to the destination. Once it’s in the destination, the file in the source directory will be deleted. No need to worry… The file will remain in the source sites recycle bin after the Move is complete. This means you can recover it if you retrieve it prior to the normal recycle schedule
- Microsoft says that they will be releasing this feature on or about January 29, 2018. Be on the lookout for this new and exciting Office 365 capability. This is certainly something that OneDrive for Business and SharePoint users are going to be excited about!
