Connecting to SharePoint PowerShell with MFA

SharePoint PowerShell is a powerful tool for managing and automating SharePoint tasks. It allows you to perform a wide range of actions, such as creating sites, managing users and permissions, and migrating data.

If your organization uses multi-factor authentication (MFA), you may need to take additional steps to connect to SharePoint PowerShell. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring users to provide additional verification, such as a code sent to their phone, in addition to their username and password.

Here are the steps to follow to connect to SharePoint PowerShell with MFA:

  1. Open the SharePoint Online Management Shell on your computer. This is a specialized PowerShell environment for working with SharePoint Online.
  2. In the SharePoint Online Management Shell, run the following command to connect to SharePoint Online:
Connect-SPOService -Url https://yourcompany-admin.sharepoint.com

Replace “yourcompany” with the name of your organization.

  1. When prompted, enter your Microsoft 365 username and password.
  2. You will then be prompted to provide the verification code for your MFA account. Check your phone or email for the code, and enter it in the prompt.
  3. Once you have successfully authenticated, you will be connected to SharePoint Online and can start using PowerShell commands to manage your SharePoint site.

It’s important to note that the MFA verification code is only valid for a limited time. If you take too long to enter the code, you will need to request a new code and try again.

The great news is that connecting to SharePoint PowerShell with MFA is a straightforward process. The steps above will help you in securely accessing your SharePoint site and will allow you to use PowerShell commands to manage and automate tasks.
