3 Reasons Why You Need Power BI.

Published: 5/2/2017 Author: Bradley Burch

Our Microsoft Power BI practice is creating a stir! The capabilities of Power BI has a lot of our clients excited about what can be done with their data. To see tabular data re-imagined and interactive is an eye-opening experience and our clients can't wait to see more!

Power BI represents a significant change to the user-data relationship. For years, data insights could only be extracted by someone that had a keen eye to recognize trends, anomalies, patterns, or data inconsistencies. And for the most part, these insights were only realized after these experts were able to pick apart an Excel spreadsheet.

With Power BI, you use that same spreadsheet as a data source… but instead of dissecting the data on our own, Power BI grabs the information and delivers a rich data visualizations that can help you uncover secrets that live inside the data. Power BI allows users apply data filters to look at very specific data sets to gain insights and make better business decisions.

Users are inspired by the capabilities of Power BI. We wanted to share the top 3 reasons that users are gravitating to Power BI as a tool to assist in data analytics and to help in making better data-driven decisions.

Data Validation

In a recent POC, we examined 25 years of lake elevation data from Folsom Lake (read full Folsom Lake Blog here) and discovered that in the data tables, there was inaccurate data in the data set. We discovered this issue with the data set when we created a visualization using Power BI. The image below showed a significant drop on graph. This dramatic dip led us to investigate the data source and identify an inaccuracy in the data set. Without a visualization, it might be easy to miss one day of inaccurate data reporting in the data set that shows daily lake elevation over a 25 year period.

Clear Visualizations

Power BI offers an extensive library of data visualizations that allow organizations to slice and dice their data and look at it through a variety of lenses. The image below shows the number of visualization options in the Power BI application. Allowing users to present data graphically, makes data easier to analyze and consume.

Integration

Power BI is a powerful application that integrates with Office 365 and works perfectly with the suite of Microsoft technologies, such as SharePoint and SQL databases. It's also important to point out that PowerBI integrates with non-Microsoft solutions, as well. Power BI currently connects to 60 common software solutions that your business may be using. Power BI allows you to pull data into a centralized, easy-to-consume dashboard. Here are a few of the 3rd party applications that are enhanced with Microsoft Power BI:

  • Google Analytics
  • SAP
  • Hadoop
  • Salesforce
  • MailChimp

Since Power BI performs the data modeling, users don't have to model data in native systems and manually export or import data. Now, data can be extracted directly from cloud, on premise, and hybrid systems.

Conclusion

Both public sector and private sector clients now have a tool that can be leveraged to make better decisions and drive improved organizational performance. Self-service business intelligence gives users and staff control over their data and allows them to extract and analyze their data without having to wait for someone to do it for them.

You can achieve a lot when using a tool like Microsoft's Power BI. Robust data analytics capabilities, information delivered to mobile devices, and a platform that can have impact across your organization (regardless of size, big or small). Visualizing data represents a significant opportunity for organizations that realize that data should be driving your decisions!
