Cool New Stuff in Office 365: The @ Mention in Outlook 2016

Published: 3/13/2017 Author: Sam Shroff

‚ÄčOur Director of Operations, @Sean Hansen, discovered this "easter egg" in Outlook 2016 and thought it was pretty cool. So, we thought we'd share! Have you ever sent an email or meeting invite to a group of people with specific instructions to one of the recipients in the body of the message or meeting invite? You think to yourself... "Will they see that they are mentioned in the message? Will they see there is something that pertains to them specifically?"

This update was a part of the July 2016 update to Microsoft Outlook 2016, so it's not technically "new." However, these latest Office 365 blogs from Kiefer were designed to share features that we are using and excited about... and this is one of them! With this update to Outlook 2016, Microsoft enabled the use  of @ mentions to get someone's attention and support a more focused inbox. This update applies to Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2016 for Mac.

If you'd like to get someone's attention in an email message or a meeting invite, you can type the @ symbol, followed by their name in the body of the email message or a meeting invite. By typing the @ symbol and their name, their name be highlighted in the message body or invite details and Outlook will automatically add them to the "To" line of the email or meeting invite. The recipient will and see the @ symbol next to the message in their inbox.

This feature was part of the July 2016 update to Microsoft Outlook 2016 and allows for better communication and collaboration  for users of Microsoft Outlook and Office 365! The feature allows users to have a focused inbox.

How to use @ in the body of a message or meeting invite

  • In the body of the email message or calendar invite, enter the @ symbol and the first few letters of the contact's first or last name.

  • When Outlook offers you one or more suggestions, choose the contact you want to mention. By default, their full name is included.

  • You can delete a portion of the mention, for example, everything other than the person's first name. The mentioned contact is also added to the To line of the email or the meeting invite.

Searching for messages that mention you

If you receive a lot of email, you might want to filter the messages in a folder to see only those messages that mention you.

In Outlook 2016

  • Above the message list, choose All.

  • Choose Mentioned Mail.
