Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is charged with protecting the lives and property, building capabilities, and supporting the communities for a resilient California. The Cal OES public-facing website is an information destination for citizens impacted by disasters, emergencies or crisis.
Cal OES’s existing Website was based on an older version of SharePoint. The design was out of date and the content was not structured in a manner that made it easy to find information.
Cal OES needed to design and build a new public Website that was targeted at their primary customers: Individuals & families, businesses & organization, schools & educators, and governments & tribes. The new website needed to be current, enable staff to easily publish information before and during a crisis, provide redundancy, make it easy for constituents to find information and work on numerous devices from desktop browsers to phones.
The Kiefer team was selected as an industry expert to mentor the technology team at Cal OES and their business partners on Website design, development and deployment best practices. Topic areas included:
- Identification of target audiences
- Identification of relevant content
- Development of a new information architecture
- Discussions on user experience
- Review of proposed website designs prepared by the Cal OES website team.
The Kiefer/ Cal OES team successfully deployed a new Website on time, within budget and scope. The Cal OES Web and Infrastructure team is now fully capable of support the new website and content owners are now able to update their own content without the help of information technology staff.
